Why Adults Seek Assessment Now

You Don't Have to Have Struggled Visibly to Benefit

Many adults reach their assessment after years of managing effectively — until something changes. Others have suspected ADHD for a long time and simply never acted on it. Both are valid reasons to find out.

01

You have always suspected ADHD but were never assessed as a child — either because it wasn't recognised, or because things held together just enough to get by.

02

You are finding it harder to manage as demands increase — at work, in relationships, or in the routines that structure adult life.

03

Someone close to you has suggested it — a partner, a family member, or a GP who has noticed a pattern that matches.

04

Your child has just been diagnosed and, in learning more about ADHD, you recognise many of the same patterns in yourself.

05

You want clarity, not a label. Whether or not the assessment confirms ADHD, knowing the actual explanation is more useful than continuing to wonder.

06

You need documentation for workplace accommodations or professional purposes, and a proper assessment by a consultant psychiatrist carries the clinical weight that screening tools do not.

What the Assessment Involves

A Thorough Process, Not a Screening Questionnaire

A full consultant assessment includes:
  • A detailed developmental history, including a genuine effort to trace symptoms back to childhood — ADHD is, by definition, a neurodevelopmental condition present from an early age, even if it wasn't recognised at the time.
  • A structured clinical interview covering attention, organisation, impulsivity, and emotional regulation across different areas of life — work, relationships, and daily functioning.
  • Standardised, validated rating scales appropriate for adult presentations, which provide structured, comparable data alongside the clinical interview.
  • Consideration of other explanations — anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, and other conditions can present with overlapping features, and a proper assessment considers these rather than assuming ADHD by default.
  • A single reasoned clinical conclusion — the assessment is designed to reach genuine diagnostic clarity, whatever that clarity turns out to be.
What happens after

If ADHD is confirmed, the consultant discusses appropriate next steps with you directly. This may include medication, where clinically suitable and something you actively choose to pursue, alongside practical strategies for work and daily life. Medication is never automatic and is only agreed following a full clinical discussion of benefits, possible side effects, and your own preferences. Follow-up is available where ongoing monitoring is clinically appropriate.
